~What I’m Working on Wednesday~ no. 26: “Apt.#J-45″

LCP News:

In addition to the upcoming show for First Friday at designHaus Denver, the Niche Promoter upstairs at Wazee Union has arranged for another Second Saturday show, so we will be presenting Encore – works by Corrina Espionsa at Wazee Union on March 10th, 2012.

Last week was the first of its kind, and I’d like to sincerely thank the Westword and Tiffany Fitzgerald for covering our Chalk Pastel Drawing class at Xcentricity Gallery.  The next class takes place March 24 and 31, 6 p.m. – 9 p.m. at Xcentricity Gallery, 4020 Tennyson Street. The fee for both nights is $125 and includes all materials. For more information contact Sophia Rose at Xcentricity Gallery on Facebook. You can read the article at Westword.com.

In the Studio:

The concept for my latest piece has been brewing for a long time now, and initially appeared in Hybrid Zoetic– with it’s Little Crazy People houses hung in the trees.  How people live, their odd habits, behaviors and the idiosyncrasies that rule daily life fascinate me, and so I’ve decided to capture some of my favorite stereo-types in a darkly humorous piece called Apt. #J-45.   I’ve renovated a bathroom medicine cabinet into an odd little apartment building which reveals 9 back rooms and a crawlspace basement, including tell tale details that narrate the lives of the people who live there.

Found object, before being renovated into Apt. #J-45

Apt.#J-45 in the making

The final product will include tiny details down to the wallpaper, furniture and of course the people themselves frozen in a moment of time and juxtaposed against the least likely neighbor in the building. It will be hilariously funny as well as extremely creepy, and you’ll be able to get a first hand look at it, and several other new works on First Friday March 2nd from 6-11 P.M., at designHaus Denver (3939 Williams)!

Until Next week,
Aways a friend in Art,

Groundhog Day
The onset of Spring is an exciting and important time of the year for LCP’s outdoor wood working studio, simply because workability is maximized in warmer weather. So naturally Groundhog day is serious business around here. While good ol’ “Chuck,” the groundhog from Staten Island has predicted an early Spring– that furry little buggar “Phil” from Washington has unfortunately declared 6 more weeks of winter. In fact there is a blizzard warning in Denver’s forecast. Boo!

Until next week, stay creative and warm!

~What I’m Working on Wednesday~ no. 23: unicorns & a naked lady

There has been a lot of excitement about the upcoming carving season at LCP this week. Since the woodcarving portion of the studio is outdoors, 80% of the woodwork is done between May and September– so it’s especially nice to get some woodwork done in January! This week I finished the Alien Unicorn, it will be on display in March at designHaus Denver, check the events page for more information.

finished wood unicorn

Continuing with the bizarre unicorn theme, I also whipped up a ceramic unicorn made of coils.

it's a piggy bank unicorn beast!

For some reason I’ve been especially interested in working with particle board this week. First, I made this nude female figure out of particle board, foam and acrylics.

And finally, I’ve started a second particle board project in two pieces that will eventually come together with foam, hinges and paint to form a single wall hanging.

I still have a lot to do on this piece, but I’m looking forward to getting it done and will have fresh pics next week~ Until then, I hope you find beauty and inspiration in all the things you do!

~What I’m Working on Wednesday~ no. 22: carving and clay

This week my focus has been on small wood carvings and clay pieces, since I finished the Fetus painting from last week. The fetus painting, by the way, came out way awesome because not only does it light up, it’s also a speaker! You can hook any MP3 player up to it and enjoy as music vibrates from the painting surface. I think it’s interesting how the mood of the image can change so drastically depending on the music you choose, my ideal choice for this piece is Pink Floyd! Thanks to everyone came out to see it at Wazee Union last Saturday! Don’t worry if you missed it, you’ll have another chance to see and hear this three dimensional speaker painting in March, watch the events page for more information on the upcoming show.

Despite the cold Colorado weather, I was able to slip into my outdoor woodcarving studio and carved a unicorn horn out of this very interesting piece of wood. I’m not going to carve anymore of the wood, just going to enjoy the natural form, stain the eye of the unicorn with red mahogany, and seal it with a nice satin finish.

before

After- not quite done.

And since my fingers went numb from the cold, I decided to do some clay work inside the studio, where it was nice and warm. I coil built this Mummy/Piggy Bank and after it’s fired I plan to cold glaze it and add lights that will be activated when a coin is dropped in.

Money hungry, Mummy bank!

In addition to making art, I’ve been writing about it as well. Take a minute to check out some of the “how to” art hubs I’ve written recently at artliving.hubpages.com

Until next week, stay crazy =D and keep living art!

This week is showtime! The studio is a bustle in preparation for LCP’s Illuminated Works show at Wazee Union this Saturday night…

who's down with LCP? yeah you know me~

even though I personally spent the week slaving over my graduate school application to Colorado University, I found some time to work on the three-dimensional fetus painting from last week.
Here are some progress shots, it’s still not finished but I’m trying to have done by Saturday, so come see it in person!

~What I’m Working on Wednesday~ no. 20: You have to live art!!

The first week of the year means that it’s not only time to get going on some new projects, but it also means it’s time to start lining up shows, entering art contests and attending community art events in order to stay in the swing of things. Check out the events page often for updates on new LCP art shows! If you or someone you love is also an artist or art lover here are some Denver events to look out for:

Xcentricity Gallery in the heart of the Tennyson Art District is having a call for entries for their February, 2012 juried art show called The Body Sacred. You can find more information about this opportunity on the facebook event page.

EDGE Gallery is hosting its first annual juried show On Edge. One show member is ceramics artist Kristin Gruenberger, who was featured in and earlier edition of WIWOW (What I’m Working On Wednesday). More information on this show can be found on the facebook event page.

Second Saturday Show!
The Niche Promotor with be featuring Little Crazy People’s light-up art along with works by Eliseo Maestas on the 2nd floor at Wazee Union for Second Saturday Open Studio! Come check out new works and old favorites, all with various illuminating elements~

Back in the Studio~
Here is a sneak peak at what I’m working on in the LCP studio: It’s a three-dimensional foam painting that is in the works. I have been putting colors down in layers to build up to a final finish that will be dominated by fiery hot reds, with pink and yellow highlights and cold, dark blue shadows. Please note that these images are process photos of a work which is not complete, and is currently in progress.

Initial foam relief sculpture.

First layer of color is yellow.

Next up some pink and blue.

Next comes flesh tones.

To be continued…..

Until Next week, have a fantastic First Friday, Denver! And for goodness sakes, go out and see some ART =D
